Retest or Refresher: About 10 to 12 Hours
Failed a test recently, or have not driven in a while? A short course can fix the faults that cost you marks. We review your test sheet, identify weak spots, and practise them until they feel easy.
Nearly Test Ready: About 14 to 18 Hours
You control the car well, but your manoeuvres, junctions and independent driving need a polish. This length gives you time to sharpen the small things that make or break a pass. You also get practice on real test routes.
Some Experience: About 20 to 25 Hours
Maybe you have had lessons before, or practised with a parent or a friend. A course spread across several days can suit learners with some previous experience. It builds good habits, fixes bad ones, and gets you ready in around a week.
Complete Beginner: About 35 to 40 Hours
Starting from zero is fine. Beginners often do well with a crash-course driving plan because nothing gets forgotten between lessons. The first days cover car controls, moving off and stopping. Then we add busier roads. Our first driving lessons page shows day one.
Manual and Automatic Intensive Driving Courses
Both gearbox types run as full courses, taught to the same standard. The real question is which one suits your life.
Manual Intensive Driving Course
Passing your test in a manual car allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars, subject to your licence conditions. Many used cars are manual, and some jobs ask for it. The trade-off is more to learn, since you must handle the clutch and gears in busy London traffic. Our manual driving lessons page explains more.
Automatic Intensive Driving Course
No clutch and no gear changes mean you can focus on the road. That feels easier in stop-and-start traffic. An automatic intensive driving course can make the early stages simpler because you do not need to manage a manual clutch or gear changes. Just know that if you pass in an automatic, your licence only covers automatic cars until you take a manual test. See our automatic driving lessons.
Semi Intensive Driving Course for a Steadier Pace
Cannot take a full week off? A semi-intensive driving course spreads your lessons over two to four weeks. You still drive often, so your skills stay fresh, but you can keep working or studying. It is a good middle path between weekly lessons and a full crash course. Ask us, and we will map out days that suit your week.
What You Need Before You Start
Some steps must happen before or during your course. Getting them ready early keeps the plan smooth and avoids delays later.
Get Your Provisional Licence
You need a provisional licence before you drive on the road. Apply online through the official driving licence service. It costs £34 online. You can apply from age 15 years and 9 months, and most people can start lessons at 17. Keep your passport and your last three years of addresses close, because the form asks for them.
Plan Your Theory Test
You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical test. It has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 43 correct. Then comes the hazard perception part, where you spot dangers in video clips. You need 44 out of 75. The test costs £23, and a pass lasts two years. Book Your Practical Test Yourself
The rules changed in 2026. Since 12 May, only the learner can book or change a car driving test. Your instructor cannot do it for you, so avoid sites that offer to book slots.
You can only change a booking twice, and you can only move to nearby centres, so choose your date and centre carefully. We will tell you when you look ready and help you plan the days before your test. A weekday practical driving test costs £62, and evenings and weekends cost £75.
